Ways To Water Your Garden

Simple watering techniques for gardens involve making simple furrows and using sprinklers, standard hoses, and soaker hoses. Installing a drip irrigation system is the most challenging way to water plants. There are several ways you can water your garden.

• Furrows: furrows are flaky trenches filtering water into raised beds for planting roots. This irrigation method is based on an ancient farming strategy, where they plant in narrow mounds or beds and then water with furrows. The beds can be apart from each other between 1 and 3 feet the further apart, the more water you require.

When youre ready to water your garden, fill the furrows with water, wait a few minutes and then finger around to ensure that the water reaches the space.

• Regular Hose: A hose attached to the outside faucet may be transferred to the region that requires water. Alternatively, use the hose to fill a watering can to water plants. While this is a primary method of watering, it is the safest way to water particular plants, such as newly planted shrubs. Having a switch at the end of the hose to control the water will make irrigation easier.

The easiest way to water your garden with a normal shaft is to maintain it running on a drop near each plant until the water is at least 6 centimeters deep.

Using Water Around Home Trees And Shrubs

Grass and/or weeds growing under and around trees and shrubs compete for the same nutrients and water. When summer rainfall is low and less than adequate watering occurs, competition for water and nutrients imposed by weeds or grass substantially reduced tree growth, bud development and fruit size. When competition from grass is eliminated, roots are more evenly distributed, root numbers increase and they utilize a larger volume of soil. Effective soil utilization by a large root system means that fertilizer and moisture will be used more efficiently.

Remove grass and/or weeds from beneath newly planted trees and shrubs as soon as possible. The longer turfgrass grows under trees and shrubs, the greater the reduction of new growth. There is also a cumulative effect which may decrease tree growth for several years. For instance, if the growth of a tree is reduced by 20 percent for one year because of grass competition, the growth automatically is 20 percent less during the second years growth. Grass competition reduces growth by as much as 50 percent.

If trees and shrubs are surrounded closely by tenacious grasses such as bermuda, remove or kill the turf. The safest grass killer for use near young trees and shrubs is glyphosate, which is sold as Roundup, Kleenup, Doomsday or Weed and Grass Killer.

Liberal watering offsets the retarding effect of grass. If the competition of grass for water can be overcome by extra watering, plants will grow much better.

How Often Should You Water Plants

DO water deeply and at fewer intervals so that you reach roots, the part of the plant that needs the nutrients, sugars and hormones contained in water. Soaking the soil to a depth of 5 to 6 inches encourages plants to grow deeper roots, which in the long run will make for a healthier garden.

DONT water lightly and often, which promotes shallow root growth.

How Much Water To Apply

How much water is needed will depend largely on the water requirements of that particular plant and how actively it is growing. The type of soil or growing media as well as weather are also important considerations.

Light sandy or chalk soils need watering more frequently than heavy clay soils, but less water can be applied at each watering, as the excess will drain away easily. Heavier, clay-based soils can be watered less frequently, but need heavier applications of water because they hold more water within their structure. Adding organic matter increases the water holding capacity of most soils.

When watering containers, try adding 10% of the volume of the container at each watering. So for a 10 litre patio pot, add 1 litre of water. Pour it on slowly, aiming to keep it in the pot and not allow it to drain out of the bottom. A saucer placed under the pot will catch any excess and allow it to be re-absorbed. For small containers, gently lift the pot after watering to see if it feels heavy, and if not, add a little more water. You will soon gauge how light the pots are when they are in need of water.

Lose Your Guilt About Wilt

Another sign is that the plants may wilt and look especially droopy. However, temporary wilting during the heat of midday does not mean that its time to water. Some plants go through an obvious midday slump, especially on very hot days, which is an indication of the plants natural adaptation to its environment. Visit your garden again in the early evening and see if the wilted plants have regained some turgidity. If they have come backthat is, if they look perkierdo not water.

Make Watering Part Of Your Morning Routine

Be choosy about your watering schedule and give your plants a long drink early in the morning when sunlight is less strong, the ground is cooler, and the foliage has time to dry before dusk. Also morning is when it tends to be less windy. Aim for between 5 a.m. and 10 a.m. Oh, and avoid watering in the evening when the damp foliage can attract insects, fungus, and disease.

COLUMBIA, Mo. How does your garden grow? No grow or slow grow? It could be your H2O.

How and when you water your garden often makes the difference between healthy or diseased plants, says University of Missouri Extension horticulturist Tom Fowler.

Fowler offers some simple watering tips that can provide a bushel of benefits.

First, water at the right time for the best results. Watering in the morning allows leaves to dry if they get wet. If watered at night, plant foliage stays wet longer.

Secondly, do not spray water on leaves. Try to water only in the root zone. Wet leaves create an environment where diseases, especially fungi, thrive.

Give your plants roots a good soaking. Light, daily watering creates shallow root systems. Long, less frequent waterings allow the soil to remain wet 6-8 inches below the surface. Fowler suggests keeping a long screwdriver or similar device near your garden spot. If the screwdriver tip easily penetrates 6 inches or so into the soil, it is watered enough.

Drip or trickle irrigation also provide good results in home gardens, Fowler says. Watering by hand allows water to go only where needed.

Most Missouri gardens need about 1-3 inches of water per week.

How Often Should You Water A Vegetable Garden

There is a tendency for gardeners to water a little each day. This is much less efficient than watering two to three times each week. Watering deeper on a less-frequent schedule will give the water time to seep into the ground.

You should strive for placing about an inch of water once each week on your vegetable garden. This has long been the rule of thumb, but you should adjust that based on the climate where you live. Obviously, hotter climates with less rainfall will require more watering.

Use water hose

Water deep and Water efficiently are the two key phrases to always keep in mind when watering your garden.

The most important part of the vegetable when it comes to watering is the root system buried beneath the soil. You want the water to get to them to encourage their growth and spread.

So while you might think you are applying enough water, the water might be flowing down the sides of the container and out the bottom, leaving your plants gasping for water.

If the container soil dries out, here are two methods to re-hydrate them:

• If the container is relatively small, fully submerge it inside a larger container or sink filled with water. Remove the small container when it has stopped bubbling.
• If the container is large and is difficult to move or lift, poke a few holes into the soil with a pencil or skewer. Then apply a gentle, slow stream of water to the soil making sure the soil is absorbing the water. Repeat this process until the soil is softened and fully moist.

Hose & Nozzle Attachment

Using a plain garden hose is a classic way to water your garden. Some nozzle attachments have multiple settings, including:

• Soaker this setting allows you to water without using a strong spray of water .
• Mist this setting allows you to lightly water soil where you have recently planted .
• Spray/Shower this setting allows you to reach a little farther if the hose is not long enough, and makes it easier to water an entire row at once.
• Jet this setting is useful if you want to clean something off .

The main advantage of this method is the ability to control how much water you use. A hose lets you water a plant just as much as it needs, and then move on to the next one. This reduces water waste and helps you avoid over watering.

The main drawback of this method is the time required. You will have to walk around with the hose and make sure every plant that needs water gets a little time under the spray nozzle. It can be boring to wait around to finish watering a big garden.

Remember that hauling a hose around the garden can be heavy work . Also, a hose can crush some of your plants if you arent careful when pulling it through the garden.
