Introducing Diy Personal Lubricant
Lets face it, when you live a natural lifestyle you quickly find yourself making everything and I really mean everything. Which then causes a lot of corner cutting. Why make eye liner when you can just bust a capsule of activated charcoal open and wet your eye liner brush? Why make personal lubricant when you can just grab the nearest jar of coconut oil , and use liberally?
And yes that is totally an option. Ive done that many, many times. But sometimes that just doesnt cut it. Coconut oil is great but it tends to need reapplication frequently and it can be a little sticky in comparison to a commercial lube. So I went on a search to develop a safe natural lube that was, well, a little more fun. In the process I discovered a world of natural lubricant options beyond coconut oil.
What Is A Homemade Lube
As the name suggests, a homemade lube is a lubricant that you do-it-yourself with some staples available around the house.
It could be natural oils , cocoa butter, shea butter, or even cannabis oil.
You can mix these and other ingredients with wax and essential oil to make a gel-like substance that improves slipperiness during sex.
In essence, a homemade lube is no different from a store-bought personal lubricant. Both have the same purpose – to reduce friction and discomfort so that your sexual experience is smoother.
Whether you enjoy sexual play solo, with a partner, or with adult toys, a personal lubricant is always a good nightstand companion.
However, it is essential to note that finding a lube that works well for you and your partner is an intimate exercise. You or your partner may be allergic to some ingredients – even if they are organic or natural.
Making something at home that works exactly for your needs may need trial and error. Therefore, you must research all ingredients before using them to make a lube at home.
While I prefer buying a natural personal lubricant that is body-safe, you can use one of the following household items as a natural substitute when you run out of your favorite store-bought lube.
Things You Should Avoid In Your Natural Lube
There are a couple of things that many people assume is a good idea to add to their homemade lube, however, they turn out to be a bad idea, because of the irritation these ingredients cause or the risks associated with them. These items include:
- Honey, which may seem like a no-brainer at first because its delicious and slippery. However, the sugar content can lead to bacteria growth and, ultimately, yeast infections. Therefore, you should keep honey away from your genitals.
- Spit, in the case that you or your partner may spread gonorrhea. If neither of you have STDs, spit is safe, but if youre not sure, dont use your own spit.
- Fragrances, whether these are in a moisturizer, oil, or aloe vera gel. Fragrances will lead to unwanted irritation.
- Dairy products such as butter. Stay away from anything that has milk or cream in it.
Another warning: whatever type of homemade lube you make, dont expect to be able to keep it around for weeks or months like you do with commercial lube. Even if you store your homemade stuff in a cool and dry place such as a cupboard, the container becomes a breeding ground for bacteria. Plus, without any kind of preservative itll go bad fast. Its safe to make your own lubebut use it within a couple of days at the most.
A great place to test is on the inside of your elbow. Keep in mind that you know your body best, and it might take some experimenting before you find a natural lube thats right for you. There are plenty of options, for sure.

Can I Use Saliva As A Natural Lubricant
While you can use saliva, its not a good personal lubricant. Your genitals are extremely sensitive and saliva is very watery. This combination isnt good and wont give you the results you are looking for.
Natural lube is slick and prevents tears and excessive friction. So, its best to use a homemade lube from coconut oil or aloe vera so you get the perfect slickness and you dont have to worry about tiny tears developing.

Coconut Oil And Shea Butter Delight

If youre a fan of oil-based lubes and dont worry about using latex condoms, then this recipe is going to be for you.
Youll need just a few ingredients:
- Pure, high-quality coconut oil
- Container for storage
Combine your coconut oil and shea butter in your mixing bowl. The ratio should be 2 parts of coconut oil and 1 part of shea butter.
The more shea butter youll add, the thicker your homemade lube will be.
Put the bowl inside the microwave and heat it on a low setting until both ingredients are melted.
Once everything is melted together, pour it inside the storing container and pop it into the fridge until its time to use it.
I recommend not storing it longer than a few weeks as its a natural product with no preservatives.

Why Choose Natural Lubricants
Have you ever looked at the ingredients list on your favorite brand of lubricant? It probably looks like a long list of long fancy names that you cant pronounce easily without pulling a face or two!
Sadly, both silicon or water based lubes readily available at your nearest kinky store are loaded with synthetic ingredients that are harmful for both you and your partner.
Ingredients such as parabens, petroleum , phenoxyethanol, glycerin and propylene glycol all are easily absorbed through the skin and all cause skin tissue damage. Aside from this, many of these ingredients are linked to rashes, skin irritations, reproductive organ damage, and central nervous system suppressant effects.
Silicon based lubricants appear to have the best consistency, but they have similar toxic side effects to that of petroleum. They coat the skin a little too well, preventing it from breathing or functioning normally. Other names for it include mirasil DM 20, vicasil 5M, dimethicone, polymerized methyl polysilozane or methyl polysiloxane.
Now youre thinking: thats okay, I can use water based lube!
Water based lubricants are loaded with many of the same above preservatives. One of the biggest problems associated with them is the use of glucose and other forms of sugar. Did you know that sugar feeds yeasts like candida and allows for the rapid growth of thrush and other STIs? Be very careful, especially when going for seemingly deliciously flavored lube that use sugar for sweetness.
Whats Wrong With Store Bought Lube
Common ingredients in store-bought lubricants are not good for your body and can really cause harm! Not only is it hard on your skin, but it can also affect your chances of getting pregnant too.
COMMON INGREDIENTS:
Aqua, glycerin, hydroxyethyl cellulose, Gluconolactone, chlorhexidine digluconate, methylparaben, sodium hydroxide
Glycerin can actually cause dryness, is toxic to sperm, and its a sugar which can lead to yeast infections.
Methylparaben is a preservative and known endocrine disruptor.
All in all, I would prefer to keep all of those ingredients outta my body.
So, whats a lazy, zero waste, newly-married girl to do?

Why Use A Natural Lubricant

As we hunt for silicone and other chemicals in our bathroom, one product seems to escape our vigilance: intimate lubricant. There are all kinds of lubricants on the market. And some are suspected of containing various ingredients harmful to health: parabens, silicones, endocrine disruptors, synthetic fragrances, glycerol, etc. According to Alternative Santé, the substances to be avoided are: endocrine disruptors , suspected of disrupting the hormonal system, allergenic substances , liable to cause an allergic reaction and glycerin , suspected of causing yeast infection in women and damaging mucous membranes. Worse, the presence of this sugar, just like that of ethylene acid, are suspected of reducing fertility by slowing down sperm.
In 2014, several associations launched the petition “So that it slides in full transparency in order to force manufacturers to disclose the components of their products. The main advantage of homemade lubricant is that it is made from simple natural products without influencing the vaginal bacterial flora.

What Exactly Is Natural
What counts as a natural lubricant is somewhat open to interpretation. When searching for a lubricant, you might want to avoid certain chemicals and toxins that you also avoid in food, makeup, and hair products.
For example, if you dont know how to pronounce an ingredient, theres a chance your body doesnt quite know how to process it.
Many experts recommend avoiding lubricants that contain parabens, petroleum, and glycerin and other sugars.
If a product has a small number of ingredients and you can pronounce most of them, its a good sign that the product is natural.
Theres some debate about whether natural also counts as organic.
Organic ingredients are generally understood to be free of additives like synthetic chemicals, artificial fertilizers, and hormones.
You might find a lube with an ingredient like coconut oil, which is natural in the sense that it comes from fruit found in nature rather than being created in a lab.
But that coconut oil may not be organic. It could be made from coconuts that are grown and processed using chemicals like pesticides.
If youre looking specifically for a lube thats natural and organic, you may want to take the extra step of looking into how the ingredients are sourced.
We considered plenty of natural lubricants before creating our final list of recommendations. Heres how we decided which ones to include:

Vegetable Canola And Other Refined Oils
You cant just grab any oil from your kitchen to use as lube.
Refined and hydrogenated cooking oils, such as vegetable oil and canola oil, go through heavy processing.
This usually includes heating, bleaching, and chemical treatments.
Thats why healthy cooking tips tend to recommend unrefined oils, such as extra virgin olive oil, instead.
This is a good tip when deciding on products to use on your body as well.
When Not To Use Skin Oils For Sex
The same rules we mentioned above for coconut oil also apply to vitamin E and primrose oils. Oil-based lubes are not a good choice when youre using barrier methods like condoms or dental dams. You should also be careful with silicone toys, as oil can cause degradation of the material. Be sure to wash your toys thoroughly directly after use.

How To Keep It Sanitary When Using Vitamin E Oil Or Primrose Oil For Lube
If youre going to use some face/hair oil as lube during sex, be sure to pour it into a small, separate container first. You want to keep your sex oils separate from your face oils. It wont harm you to mix them, but it is kind of icky.
We also suggest taking a travel-sized shampoo bottle and filling it with oil to keep by the bed.
Or you could just plan ahead for next time by buying some lube from the store thats specifically designed to safely enhance sex.
