To remove the salt from seawater you need to distill the water. You can do this either by boiling it and collecting the steam or using the sun to evaporate the water.

Why Cant You Drink Salt Water
There are many reasons not to drink salt water, including:
- The human kidney cannot eliminate large quantities of salt. This means you need to create more urine and you can become very dehydrated.
- Too much salt causes blood pressure to rise and this can lead to organ failure.
- The kidneys become overworked trying to excrete the extra salt.
- You may experience muscle cramps from drinking salt water.

Your Own Personal Desalination Plant
Remember looking at the picture at the top of this page of a floating solar still? The same process that drives that device can also be applied if you find yourself in the desert in need of a drink of water.
The low-tech approach to accomplish this is to construct a “solar still” which uses heat from the sun to run a distillation process to cause dew to form on something like plastic sheeting. The diagram to the right illustrates this. Using seawater or plant material in the body of the distiller creates humid air, which, because of the enclosure created by the plastic sheet, is warmed by the sun. The humid air condenses water droplets on the underside of the plastic sheet, and because of surface tension, the water drops stick to the sheet and move downward into a trough, from which it can be consumed.

Under very high pressure, thousands of tightly wrapped, semipermeable membranes are forced through the ocean in search of water. The device doesnt rely on any filters like traditional desalination machines. Instead, it zaps the water with electric currents to remove minerals such as salt particles from the water. While most desalinization happens on an industrial scale, providing water to millions of people at a time, you can build a homemade desalinization system to remove the minerals that make salt water undrinkable. Distillation creates drinkable water by heating salt water until it evaporates, then capturing the condensation.
Build a fire that’s small enough that the water won’t boil over when it’s placed over the fire. The fire should be built so the large pot can sit level on the embers.
Place the 1-gallon pot directly on the embers. Place the 1-quart pot in the center of the larger pot, with the medium-sized rock in the quart pot. The rock must be heavy enough to keep the smaller pot from floating once the saline water is added to the larger pot. Fill the large pot with sea water until the water is just below the brim of the inner, smaller pot.
Take the plastic sheet and loosely, but completely, cover the top of the larger pot. Tie the string around the plastic and the pot to make a complete seal. Place the smaller rock in the center of the plastic sheet so it is directly over the center of the inner pot.
