There is so much misinformation on what foods you should or shouldn’t feed hummingbirds. I don’t want to add any of my own opinions. Instead, I will defer to the formula recommended by the Smithsonian’s National Zoo .
That expert states to ALWAYS use refined white sugar. That is common table sugar. It further goes on to clarify: NEVER use honey, corn syrup, or raw sugar when feeding hummingbirds. Refining sugar removes any molasses. Molasses contains iron. While iron is good for people, it is very bad for hummingbirds.
Bacteria and fungus thrive in honey mixed with water and left outside, as is the case for hummingbird feeders. These are deadly to hummingbirds. One common fungal infection caused by feeding honey causes the hummingbird’s tongue to swell. The tongue becomes extended and hangs outside the bill. Birds eventually starve. Very sad. Totally preventable.
If you use tap water and a clean mixing bowl, there is no need to boil your water when you make hummingbird nectar. In fact, you don’t even need to heat it at all. Sugar dissolves better in warm water than cold. That’s the only reason to even heat the water. Boiling won’t make clean dishes and ingredients more sanitary or make the food last longer.
Trying Hummingbird Nectar Recipes With Honey Or Other Sugars
Honey and maple syrup have soared in popularity with no sugar added becoming a frequent selling point for cereals and sweets. With hummingbirds, though, the National Audubon Society advises sticking with refined sugar. Honey, when diluted with water, can cause fungus growth. Organic, natural and raw sugars might have levels of iron that could harm the birds. Say no to molasses, brown sugar or sugar substitutes as well.
How Can I Make Hummingbird Food Without Boiling Water
If you are unable to heat water, you can stir the granulated sugar vigorously until it dissolves into the water. Or put the sugar and water in a jar and seal the lid and shake until dissolved. This method can take longer.
Alternatively, allow the sugar to sit in the water for an hour before stirring and it will probably dissolve on its own, especially if you allow the water to sit in the hot sun.

Flowers To Attract Hummingbirds

Natural nectar found in flowers is mostly a sucrose solution. Luckily, white sugar is also made of sucrose, so when its mixed with the appropriate amount of water, it closely resembles natural nectar that hummingbirds find in nature.
Dont try to get fancy and use brown sugar or an artificial sweetener in your recipe. Neither of these will work nor will be good for hummingbirds! Please stick to plain old white sugar.
Use Small Quantities And Clean Your Feeder Often
Homemade hummingbird food is basically a version of simple syrup and will keep in your refrigerator for two weeks. Since this is just sugar water, it can mold in hot weather. And, hot water sitting outside is just asking for trouble in large quantities. We fill our feeder with 1-2 cups of water every 10 days or so . Also, be sure to wash your feeder with soap and water every month or so to prevent it from getting sticky or moldy.

Lower Concentrations Of Hummingbird Nectar Recipe
And what about lower concentrations?
The more diluted the nectar, the more consumption of nectar is needed to satisfy a hummingbird’s energy requirements.
McWhorter and Martez del Rio found that, dependingon sugar concentration, Broad-tailed Hummingbirds consumed volumes of nectar ranging from 1.6 to 5.4 times their body mass per day.
Weaker concentrations are less attractive to hummers & you’ll find they may just stop coming to your feeder to find a better, concentrated source.
In addition, because hummingbirds will have to consume more of a dilute nectar to get the same energy from a concentrated one, their bodies will have to work harder.
The rate of energy assimilation may be constrained by excess water elimination.
So when making your hummingbird food recipe solution, don’t go weaker than the 1:4 ratio of sugar to water.
Should You Add Red Food Coloring
The answer is definitely no, dont add red food coloring to your hummingbird food recipe. We dont recommend adding anything unnecessary to any bird food, including hummingbird nectar, because the impacts of most additives on bird health are unknown. So, better to keep it as pure and simple as possible, just sugar and water, says Greig. Hummingbirds are attracted to the color red, so many feeders have a bit of red in their design. Pure white cane sugar is the best and safe ingredient for preparing artificial Hummingbird Nectar. The only other substitute that experts suggest to go with is Beet Sugar.

What Is The Shelf Life Of Homemade Hummingbird Nectar
Unused homemade hummingbird nectar can be stored in the refrigerator for 10 to 14 days. It is preferable to make a one-week supply of food at a time to keep the nectar fresh, consistent and free of bacteria for the hummingbirds. Warm nectar will ferment more quickly once it becomes contaminated.
This customary habit of making new hummingbird nectar every 5 to 7 days keeps the feeder clean of mold and mildew that may form inside or around the feeder when the summer days become extremely hot. Personally, I have no problem refilling my feeder regularly which will ensure frequent, healthy and happier visitors to my sanctuary.
Why Would You Boil Your Hummingbird Nectar
You dont NEED to boil your sugar water. Some do, some dont. You probably dont have much bacteria in your tap water, but thats why you might boil in the first place.
Boiling kills bacteria present which helps the sugar water last longer outside before it ferments. Especially if the nectar will be in the heat where bacteria grows more quickly.
Fermenting happens when the bacteria uses up the sugar, creating byproducts like alcohol and lactic acid which isnt good for the hummingbirds. So starting out with less bacteria and microbes will slow that process.
If you have other impurities in your water that dont boil out, you can use filtered water. However, from what Ive found on main birding websites, most tap water is just fine.
If you choose not to boil, you may want to at least heat up the water enough to help the sugar dissolve faster. The flip side is youll have to wait for it to cool to room temp to put it in your feeder.

Our Hummingbird Nectar Recipe
Simply bring 1 cup of tap water to a boil and stir in ¼ cup of Domino® Granulated Pure Cane Sugar until fully dissolved. Allow mixture to cool to room temperature, and then add it to your feeder.
If you have a large feeder, simply add more nectar by sticking to the ratio of 1-part sugar to 4 parts water. The solution will keep in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.
How Long Does Hummingbird Nectar Last
Once you make your sugar water you can store any excess in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.
If you notice mold growing at any time throw it out and make a fresh batch.
Sugar water in your feeders will last around 2-3days before you should change it. This may be even sooner if the feeder is in direct sunlight in the summer months.
If youre lucky your hummingbird visitors will finish the sugar water so none goes to waste.

Get The Sweet Spot Right
The ratio of sugar and water can be slightly adjusted in this hummingbird nectar recipe, but a solution that is too sweet will be difficult for the birds to digest and one that does not contain enough sugar will not be suitable to attract hummingbirds. The 4:1 water to sugar ratio most closely approximates the sucrose levels in the natural nectar of hummingbirds favorite flowers.
