Lake Huron Surface Water Temperatures Surprisingly Colder Now Than Last Year
Lake Huron surface water temperatures currently are slightly colder than this time last year.
We’ve had two bouts of cold weather this winter here in Michigan, but it has certainly not been as cold as last winter.
So you wouldn’t expect Lake Huron water temperatures to currently be colder than this time last year.
The top graphic shows the current surface water temperature for January 19, 2015 on the left versus the water temperature for January 19, 2014 on the right. Although the temperature difference isn’t much, this year Lake Huron is .26°F colder than this time last year. To me it is surprising the surface temperature is colder than last year. Last year Detroit had already had five days below zero, while this year only two.
The water temperatures at the bottom of Lake Huron are also colder than this time last year, but just slightly.
The bottom of Lake Huron is 37.51°F currently.
Whole lake still slightly warmerEven though the surface water and lake bottom temperatures of Lake Huron are colder now than last year, the whole volume of the lake is still slightly warmer than last year. Lake Huron as a whole has a modeled total average temperature of 39.2°F now versus 39.0°F last year.
Summer Mean Surface Water Temperature Calculations
We calculated summer mean temperatures for a 3-month period. Generally, for lakes situated in the Northern Hemisphere we used the period of 1 July30 September whereas, in the Southern Hemisphere, we used 1 January31 March . Exceptions were latitudes less than 23.5°, for which the JAS metric was used south of the equator and the JFM metric was used north of the equator. This was done in order to avoid the cloudy wet season in the tropics and instead collect data during the dry season, which allows for an increased number of cloud-free satellite observations. We use the term summer throughout to refer to these time periods depending upon location of the lake. The only exception to this time period was the in situ data for Toolik Lake, Alaska, for which we used June-August because of the lack of data available for September due to the early onset of winter at this high latitude. The term winter refers to the 3-month period opposite summer in the calendar year.

Great Lakes Summer: What You Need To Know Before You Go Swimming In The Lakes
Summer is at its peak in northern Michigan so that means getting out on the water is top priority for many. But, before you decide to make a splash, make sure to be aware of the water temperatures.
Water temperature plays an important role in the ability to enjoy your time on the water. Whether or not you plan on swimming or just boating you need to know what could happen if you fall in the water.
This is important because hypothermia is often a concern during long-term exposure of water temperatures that are below 70°.
So what does that have to do with the Great Lakes during the summer? Thanks to satellite technology along with buoys along the lake shores, accurate measurements of the temperatures in the Great Lakes are able to be recorded.
Data from these sources summarized by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration report that Lake Erie as a whole is currently at 72°, Lake Huron is at 62 °, and Lake Michigan is at 65°. Each of these readings are near their 29-year average for this time of year.
These water temperatures can be found at popular beaches near Ludington and Manistee on Lake Michigan. Oscoda Beach Park on Lake Huron actually has a local temperature of 70°!
Why do each of these places have different water temperatures despite being in the same region? The water temperature is dependent on a few different factors.
Assessment Of Sampling Gap Impacts On Temperature Trends

The mean summer temperature for each lake was then calculated by taking the mean of those daily estimates. The figure shows interpolation conducted with temperature measurements conducted at an interval of once every 10 days , once every 20 days , or once every 30 days . At high sampling intervals , linear interpolation can underestimate daily temperatures, leading to an underestimate of the mean summer temperature.

Quality Control And Assurance Of In Situ Data
In order to efficiently assemble a complete product from the disparate data sources used for this dataset, we composed a set of scripts in the R programming language. After the assembly of the dataset was complete, we examined the distribution of mean lake temperatures using a series of histograms and maps. The histograms allowed us to identify outliers while the maps provided geographic plots that could be examined for unusual observations or spatial patterns that might indicate technical errors during the assembly of the dataset. To maximize our chances of identifying erroneous values, the histograms and maps were examined by all co-authors. To ensure that the geomorphometric data in the completed dataset were accurate we had several individuals independently check the values against reputable sources.
The final step taken to assure the quality of our assembled dataset was to share the derived mean summer temperatures and geomorphometric data with the original data providers. We sent an email to each of the data providers containing the relevant data for their lake along with a request to validate the values that we have included in the completed dataset. This final step was probably the most important as it allowed us to get feedback from the individuals that are most familiar with the lakes in our dataset. Whenever there were inconsistencies in data, we worked directly with the original data provider to resolve the issue and update the data accordingly.
Above Average: Great Lakes Water Temperatures Keep High After Record
Lake Ontario broke a record this July for hottest surface water temperature ever recorded on the lake since 1995.
Lake Ontario isnt alone. All five of the Great Lakes surface water temperatures are still above their 1995-2020 averages as of Aug. 21, according to NOAA Great Lakes CoastWatch.
According to air temperature predictions made by NOAA Weather Service, above normal air temperatures during the rest of August and September could potentially translate to continued high surface temperatures in the Great Lakes for the rest of summer.
The most staggering representation of these increased temperatures comes from Lake Ontario, which reached 76.928 degrees Fahrenheit on July 10. That is 9.72 degrees above the average temperature for July 10 from 1995 to 2020 and constitutes the warmest surface water temperature ever recorded on Lake Ontario, according to NOAA CoastWatch data. The surface water temperature of Lake Ontario continues to remain above average, having hit 73.814 degrees Fahrenheit on Aug. 20.

These high water temperatures are mainly caused by persistent warm weather along with light winds.
Climate change is clearly affecting the Great Lakes, Andrea Vanderwoude, manager of the Great Lakes CoastWatch, said in an email. This particular warming is consistent with the larger warming that is occurring.

Satellite Surface Water Temperatures
We compiled satellite-derived surface water temperatures from 154 lakes . The methodology used for obtaining satellite-based lake surface temperatures largely follows the approach described in Schneider and Hook. Only lakes that exhibited at least a 10×10km area of pure water surface without any islands or shorelines were selected, in order to make sure that there was no contamination by land surfaces. We used data from two series of satellite instruments in order to maximize the sampling frequency and thus to provide more accurate estimates of the average lake surface temperature for each July, August, and September / January, February, and March period. These were the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer series and the Along Track Scanning Radiometer series.

Solar Longwave And Total Radiation
Summer and winter surface solar and longwave radiation data are a satellite product taken from the NASA/Global Energy and Water Cycle Experiment Surface Radiation Budget radiation dataset, version 3.0 . The data are generated on the basis of the International Satellite Cloud Climatology Project DX radiance and cloud parameters, using an updated version of the University of Marylands shortwave flux algorithm and an adaptation of the longwave algorithm. The dataset has a spatial resolution of 1°× 1° and temporal resolution of 3h. In addition to the SRB incoming shortwave radiation and longwave radiation , we also provide estimates of the total incoming radiation that is absorbed by a dark, water surface under ice-free conditions .
Why Is The Water Temperature Important
The water temperature is critical when producing lake effect precipitation.
A big part of the equation when producing lake effect is the difference in temperature between the surface of the water and height threshold into the lower atmosphere. Meteorologists watch this threshold very closely through Lake Effect season.
The key number used is 13° C or 23° F. The numbers are the change in temperature between two layers. This number is used to indicate if lake effect will be possible when used as a difference in temperature between the surface of the water and the temperature that is around 1.5km, or around 5,000ft in the atmosphere.
Think of this number as the magic number to get lake effect going.
An example: If the water temperature off of Cleveland, Ohio was 64° F and the air temperature at 5,000ft in the atmosphere was at 41° F, you could expect lake effect clouds to form. That is if many other variables were in place as well to produce the bands of clouds/precipitation.
If the air temperature was warmer at 5,000ft, the chance for any lake effect would be limited to not even possible as there is not enough of a chance in temperature to grow the clouds thick enough the produce precipitation.
The bigger the change in temperature between the water surface and the 5,000ft level, the more intense the lake effect can become.
If this Delta T is really big, you may expect heavy snow or rain depending on the air temperature where the precipitation is falling.

Great Lakes Water Temperatures At Record Levels
Looking to escape to the beach this summer? Well, before you book that trip to Cape Cod or the Outer Banks of North Carolina, you might want to consider an unorthodox option the shores of Lake Superior. The lake, which is the northernmost, coldest, and deepest of the five Great Lakes, is the warmest it has been at this time of year in at least a century, thanks to the mild winter, warm spring, and hot, dry summer.

OK, so the lakes average water temperature is still a bracing 68 degrees, but it’s considered downright tropical for the region. As the above chart shows, based on the 30-year average, the lakes average water temperature should be in the mid-50s. But thanks to scant lake ice cover this past winter, along with a rare March heat wave and warmer-than-average weather since then, the lake began warming earlier than normal, and that warming has kept right on going. Wintertime ice cover on the Great Lakes was the lowest observed since such records began in 1980.
Its pretty safe to say that what were seeing here is the warmest that weve seen in Lake Superior in a century, said Jay Austin, a professor at the University of Minnesota at Duluth, who has researched the lakes water temperatures back to the beginning of the 20th century.
Validation Of Satellite Data With In Situ Measurements
We validated the satellite data with the in situ data by conducting four analyses. First, we compared summertime mean values for the 11 lakes that had both satellite and in situ data . Second, we compared interannual anomalies. The RMSE between satellite and in situ measurements for the 11 long-term summer mean lake surface temperatures was 1.15°C. Differences between the two mean values are assumed to be the result of different sampling times , different sampling frequencies, measurement errors, and differences between skin and bulk water temperatures. When we compared interannual anomalies , the RMSE declined to 0.72°C. Third, we compared trends from the in situ data for 19852009. Trends that we calculated from temporally-matched satellite and in situ summer means for the 11 lakes had an RMSE difference of 0.03°C per year.
