Health Risks Of Fluoride
The most common adverse reaction is fluorosis, especially for kids under eight years old. Dental and skeletal fluorosis is the condition of excessive exposure to fluoride. Luckily dental fluorosis is mainly cosmetic. White spots appear on the teeth but it does not affect the function of teeth. However, skeletal fluorosis is more serious, affecting the bones and joints. It causes pain, stiffness, and can calcify the ligaments.
Some studies show more severe health effects such as bone fractures, thyroid disorders, and brain development impairment.
The maximum amount allowed in water from public water systems is 4.0 mg/L set by the EPA. However, the Department of Health and Human Services sets their maximum level at 0.7 milligrams per liter. Read more about the discrepancy between the two.
Water Filters That Will Remove Fluoride

- First there’s Reverse Osmosis . You’ve probably heard of this before. It’s a water filtration system that you hook up to your plumbing. It has several filters and an RO membrane, which is the part that works on the fluoride.
- Another popular type of water filtration system is the gravity filter, which sits on your countertop. It uses activated alumina* or some other type of fluoride-blocking media to remove fluoride from the water.
- Deionization filters will also remove fluoride, but I’ve never seen any for home use. They are usually used for chemistry labs and in manufacturing. I’m not covering them in this review.
- There are a few brands of water purifying pitchers that can filter out fluoride. You need to do a little digging to find them, but they’re out there. I’ve included one – Clearly Filtered – in this review.
- One other option is distillation. A water distiller will remove fluoride, but it’s not technically a water filter. This is a good option, though, so I wanted to be sure to cover it along with the filters. And distilled water has other health benefits besides reducing fluoride.

Iron Removing Water Filters
How do I get iron out of my water?
Iron water filter systems use similar technology as a water softener, meaning there is a media-bed that attracts and filters out iron from the water source before it is distributed throughout the home or facility. For more extreme levels of Iron presence, some even prefer to combine the use of an iron water filter system and a water softener.
Why worry about iron anyway?
Iron can be found in most tap water from groundwater sources. Tap water can even source up to 5% of a persons daily iron intake. In smaller amounts iron is harmless and even has beneficial effects in the cardiovascular system. However, if there is an overabundance of iron in the water supply to your home, the water may cause staining, clogging, a metallic taste, and in some cases, even health risks.
APEC Water Systems iron water filters are high tech, easy to install, and require low maintenance. Our iron removing water filters are available for any size home or facility.
Is Reverse Osmosis Water Good For Your Teeth
Yes, reverse osmosis water is very good for your teeth and can be beneficial in providing optimal dental health. Reverse osmosis water is typically highly purified and does not contain minerals and other elements that can cause tooth decay.
It can also help remineralize and strengthen tooth enamel, reducing acidity and the risk of cavities. In addition, reverse osmosis water has very low levels of bacteria and other contaminants that can be harmful to the mouth and teeth, so it can help reduce oral health issues such as gum disease and bad breath.
Therefore, drinking reverse osmosis water can help to keep your teeth and mouth in optimal health.

Can Bacteria Grow In Ro Water
No, bacteria typically cannot grow in RO water. Most bacteria requires some dissolved minerals in order to survive and reproduce. In RO water, the majority of these minerals are removed through the filtration process.
Without these minerals, bacteria generally cannot survive. Some bacteria can actually be beneficial for water quality and can help to remove any remaining impurities. However, these bacteria have a difficult time surviving in RO water and therefore may not be present in large enough quantities to have any positive effect.
Additionally, RO water is considered to be sterile, meaning that it has a low concentration of any living organisms, including bacteria. In conclusion, bacteria generally cannot grow in RO water.
How Does A Water Distiller Work
There’s an interesting way that distillation differs from filtration.
Instead of removing contaminants from the water, the process of distillation removes the water from the contaminants. That sounds similar, but it’s not the same.
A distiller boils the water and turns it into steam. Chemical contaminants, including fluoride, are left behind. The high temperature also kills any biological contaminants like viruses or bacteria. As the steam cools, it turns back into pure water, which is collected in some kind of container.
I’ve had a hard time nailing down the exact percentage of fluoride reduction by distillation. Most everything I have read says that distillation removes “a high percentage” or “most, if not all” fluoride from water.

How Pfas Pfos And Pfoa Enter The Water Supply
There are several ways to come into contact with PFAS. This could happen if you drink PFAS-contaminated water or eat PFAS-contaminated food. Exposure can also occur as a result of using PFAS-containing items or through public water systems and drinking water from wells.
PFAS water contamination is most commonly connected with areas close to a specific facility, such as an industrial site where PFAS were used to make other products and firefighting locations like oil refineries and airfields.
In fact, PFAS contamination is an urgent problem across the U.S. because of the use of PFAS in fire-fighting foam. Especially on and around military bases and airports.
Concerningly, PFAS is toxic and is currently estimated to contaminate the drinking water of nearly 110 million Americans.

About Total Dissolved Solids
Does TDS measure water quality?
The answer is no. A TDS meter simply measures dissolved solids in water, NOT dissolved contaminants. A higher TDS can simply be high calcium or mineral content.
A TDS meter is not recognized in the industry as a proper means of testing water for contaminants. They were created years ago by the manufacturers of reverse osmosis systems as a means of demonstrating the effectiveness of RO which removes most if not all minerals.

Fluoride Water Filters & Fluoride Removal
Fluoride is a common constituent of many minerals. It is voluntarily added to some drinking water systems as a public health measure for reducing the incidence of cavities. Although helpful for dental health in low dosages, chronic exposure to fluoride in large amounts interferes with bone formation. Recently, water fluoridation has even been linked to higher ADHD rates. Read what Newsweek had to say here. Municipal water treatment plants commonly add fluoride to the water for prevention of tooth decay, and they try to maintain a level of 1.5 – 2.5 mg/l. Concentrations above 5 mg/l are detrimental to tooth structure. High concentrations are contained in waste water from the manufacture of glass and steel, as well as from foundry operations. Organic fluorine is present in vegetables, fruits, and nuts. Inorganic fluorine, under the name of sodium fluoride, is a waste product of aluminum and is used in some rat poisons. The MCL established for drinking water by the US EPA is 4 mg/l.
Fluoride found in ground water happens naturally from the breakdown of rocks and soils or weathering and deposition of atmospheric volcanic particles. Fluoride can also come from runoff and infiltration of chemical fertilizers in agricultural areas, septic and sewage treatment system discharge in communities with fluoridated water supplies, and liquid waste from industrial sources.

How Can I Test For Fluoride In My Water
You cant see, taste or smell fluoride in your water, so if you want to find out how much fluoride youre drinking, youll need to perform a water test.
There are two ways to test your water for fluoride: using an at-home test kit or sending your water off for accredited laboratory testing.
At-home test kits are the more affordable option, and can give you an indication of how much fluoride your water contains. Youll receive a color chart and some testing strips. Dip a strip in a sample of your water and watch it change color. Compare the color of the strip to the color chart. This will tell you approximately how much fluoride is in your water.
Laboratory tests are more expensive, but can tell you exactly what youre dealing with, with a much higher level of accuracy. Youll need to send a sample of your water to a local laboratory and wait for your test results to be delivered to you, usually by email. You can choose to test your water just for fluoride, or for a range of impurities including fluoride.
You can learn more about testing your water for fluoride here.
When To Change The Filter
Make sure to consult the user manual released by the manufacturer to find out exactly when you have to change the filter. It should tell you the total capacity along with a rough estimation .
The best under sink water filters should last anywhere between 6 months and 2 years before they need to be replaced.
However, this depends on other aspects, such as how many people live in your household, in order to calculate the total water consumption.
If the filtering system is equipped with a filter replacement indicator, then you dont have to worry since the unit will let you know when its time to make the switch. For instance, the Waterdrop WD-TSU-W 3-Stage Ultra Filtration Under Sink Water Filter Systemcomes with a filter replacement indicator.
Additionally, the quality and hardness level of the water that powers your home is important. If the water is filled with many contaminants, then the water filter will wear off quickly. You can perform a test to check the water hardness. In this case, the best time to change the filter is when it is visibly dirty.

Bone Char Carbon Filters
Bone char is highly porous, making it ideal for reducing on average up to 90-95% fluoride in drinking water.
Although bone char carbon isnt highly used, its worth considering for its ability to remove fluoride, radionuclides, and heavy metals. Such contaminants are difficult to remove separately, let alone together, which is why bone char carbon is well worth considering.
Keep in mind that bone char carbon and activated carbon arent the same thing, and use very different chemical reactions to treat contaminated water.
Does Your Fridge Water Filter Remove Fluoride
Many Americans have tried to assuage their guilt and worry about drinking fluoride-laced drinking water by only using the filtered water from their refrigerators. But is your fridge water filter capable of filtering out fluoride?
Thats something that you will need to research, as each fridge water filter is built differently. Also, if you arent regularly replacing your water filter, then you might be drinking contaminated water unknowingly.

How Do Chlorine And Fluoride Enter Your Water
Let us begin with chlorine, as you may already know about its presence in the water. You may have heard about chlorine purification. You can add chlorine to remove contaminants and clean the pool if you own a pool.
Similar to this, the water supply systems use chlorine. Chlorine effectively kills microorganisms such as viruses, bacteria, and other harmful substances in the water. Hence, it gets frequently used by public and private water treatment plants. The government might add a regulated amount of chlorine to your water supply to avail of the benefits.
Next, we have fluoride in water. Fluoride is a mineral that helps counter tooth decay in humans. It is considered a healthy and beneficial mineral, which the government adds to your water supply. But, again, this amount is regulated heavily.
But fluoridated toothpaste and other fluoride-added substances combined with the water supply may increase the fluoride levels in your body to dangerous levels. Hence, people prefer fluoride from their teeth care supplies rather than from the water.

Activated Alumina Fluoride Removal

Activated alumina water filters are highly effective at removing fluoride. A quality activated alumina filter can remove up to 99% of fluoride. The EPA Secondary Standard limit for fluoride is 2 ppm. An activated alumina filter can reduce the fluoride level from 2 ppm to .1 ppm through the process of fluoride adsorption.
Activated alumina also does a marvelous job of removing arsenic. There are two types of common activated alumina water filters: countertop and whole-house.
Activated Alumina Whole House Filter
Activated Alumina Countertop Filter
For most people, we recommend the countertop version because its more convenient and easier to install. Also, you may not require whole-house fluoride removal.
The countertop version is more than adequate to remove fluoride from your drinking water, and you get on-demand filtered water, unlike a water filter pitcher.
