How Does The Proper Burner Flame Pattern Look Like

Burner Assembly

A water heater burner will produce a stable flame only when there is a correct amount of fresh air coming into the combustion chamber. The best way to inspect the flame pattern is through the small viewport located at the bottom of the unit.

The correct gas combustion should generate a soft blue flame where some yellow inner cones are allowed, and the flame is drawn into the draft hood. Soon after the start-up, the burner will radiate and glow in the bright orange .

A lack of oxygen will cause the gas burner to produce an unstable flame pattern that changes the color into yellow and flattens. The lazy, yellow flame is usually the first symptom of the more severe problem – sooting.

Reconnect the gas line. Coat the threaded ends with pipe joint compound and screw the first nipple into the gas valve. Use two pipe wrenches to avoid stressing the valve. Reassemble the remaining nipples, finishing up with the union . Then follow these four steps to fill the tank: Close the drain valve turn the water back on at the main shutoff and open the cold water valve to the water heater turn on a nearby hot water faucet until water comes out and inspect all the joints and fittings for water leaks.

Temperature Pressure Relief Valve

This is a safety feature that all water heaters must have, and it is usually positioned on the top of the tank, or it may be on the side of the tank, providing that it is within six inches of the top of the tank.

In older homes, you may notice that your temperature-pressure relief valve is not on the tank itself and is instead on the hot water pipe above. This was standard practice many years ago, but it is no longer considered to be safe, and if your water heater is set up like this, then you may want to consider replacing it with a modern, safer model.

The relief valve on a water heater works by allowing water to escape from the tank in the event that the pressure or temperature becomes too high. This is vital because, without the relief valve, the tank could explode in such circumstances.

Another safety feature of the temperature-pressure relief valve is that it will have an extension tube that reaches all the way down the side of the tank, almost to floor level. This is so that if anybody happens to be near the water heater when water is released via the relief valve, they wont get sprayed and potentially burnt by hot water or steam.

If you notice that the relief valve is continually leaking, then it is very important that you replace it rather than attempt to repair it. As a safety feature of the water heater, it is essential that it is in good working order.

Installation Details For Electric Water Heaters

First turn off the power to the water heater at your main electrical panel. Then follow the same draining procedures as for a gas water heater.

When the water heater is drained, disconnect the electrical wires from the screw terminals under the access panel, which is usually located near the top.

Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for wiring the new water heater. If the new water heater is shorter and the old wires won’t reach, surface-mount a 4-in. x 4-in. x 1-1/2 in. metal electrical box on the wall or ceiling nearby, run the old wires to the box, and then run a new section of armored cable or electrical conduit to the water heater. Check the instructions and make sure the rating of the old fuse or circuit breaker is high enough to handle the new water heater. In addition, the circuit should have a shutoff switch within sight of the water heater.

Where Is The Pilot Located

The pilot is located near thebottom of the unit, attached to the gas valve, through the burner door assembly, and to the bottom of the main burner. You cannot see the entire pilot directly from an outside view, but you may be able to see the silver pilot tube line and copper thermocouple or thermopile leading down from the gas valve inside the burner or manifold door assembly. You can see the water heater’s burner door when you remove the panel that covers it. Upon removal, you may see a red/orange circular grommet inserted into the burner door assembly. The grommet helps affix the pilot into place as half of its lines are inside the unit and half are outside, connected to the gas valve. Beyond the components of the pilot assembly, the burner door also contains the sight glass which allows you to see the burner chamber and the flame when the water heater is in operation.

How To Remove A Gas Burner

How to Replace the Burner Assembly in a Gas Water Heater
  • Turn the gas supply to the water heater OFF at the manual shut-off valve.
  • Turn the thermostat dial on the gas control valve to OFF.
  • Remove the outer door.
  • Disconnect the elements from the manifold assembly: gas valve, pilot tube, thermopile…
  • Remove the manifold assembly.
  • Remove the burner by unscrewing the bolts.
  • Keep its chamber sealed, and if, for some reason, gaskets are removed, they must be replaced.

Look For Bubbles At Connections

Turn on the gas and check connections for leaks by brushing a 50-50 mixture of dishwashing liquid and water over the joints. If the mixture bubbles, you have a leak. Tighten or reconnect joints that leak. Wipe the joints dry when finished. Call the plumbing inspector to check over your work. Follow the how-to advice that accompanies the photos to make sure the connections are tight.

Inspecting The Gas Burner

The experts and manufacturers recommend inspecting the water heater burner assembly at least once a year. It can be done often, which depends on the usage and operating conditions. The water heater burner should be inspected with and without the flame.

The reason for the inspection is to ensure that when the gas is burning, the correct flame shape and color have developed, and there are no obstructions on the burner ports, main line, and orifice.

If using the insulation blanket to reduce the standby heat loss, make sure that the air openings are free of obstructions also.

Sooting is what you should look for.

Sooting is recognized as smoking and carbon formation. This is a severe problem related to gas burners, as it can affect not only the proper gas combustion but harm your health or damage the property. If this problem occurs, turn the unit OFF immediately.

Let’s Apply Our Gas Stove Top Idea To A Gas Water Heater:

Gas appliances are generally very similar in their sequence of operations. A gas water heater compared to a gas stove is no exception: the water heater’s gas valve has a knob or dial on the front which can be used to control the temperature settings, also controlling whether any gas enters the unit through the gas line. Conventional gas valve models have a separate knob which can be used to spark the pilot’s ignitor. Adjusting the knob by turning it on/off or setting the temperature will communicate to the desired temperature to the gas valve’s thermostat. Please note that it isnotrecommended that you change the settings from those outlined in the manufacturers installation manual toreduce the risk of scalding.

When there is a demand for hot water, the gas valve’s thermostat communicates with the pilot assembly. When the ignitor sparks, it ignites the pilot light, then the flame spreads to the main burner. The thermocouple or thermopile then maintains communication with the gas valve to ensure that the water heater is operating safely via electrical current. In the event that the pilot flame or pilot light goes out, the thermocouple will send a signal to close off the gas valve and gas supply because its outgoing electric current will decrease, indicating there is an issue.

Basics Of Gas Water Heater Operation

Removing a Water Heater Gas Valve and Burner Assembly

As the name suggests, a tank-type water heater heats cold water and stores the hot water until it is needed by various plumbing fixtures and appliances in the home. A gas water heater works by a law of physics knowns as convectionwhich defines how heat rises. In the case of a water heater, the cold water enters the tank through a cold water supply tube to force a constant supply of cold water into the tank. The dense cold water at the bottom of the tank is heated by a gas burner located below the sealed tank. As the water grows warmer, it rises in the tank, where it is drawn off by the hot water discharge pipe to provide hot water wherever it is called for. The hot water discharge pipe is much shorter than the dip tube, since its goal is to funnel off the hottest water, which is found at the very top of the tank.

The gas burner that heats the water is controlled by a gas regulator assembly mounted on the side of the water heater, which includes a thermostat that measures the temperature of the water inside the tank and turns the burner on and off as needed to maintain the set temperature of the water.

An exhaust flue runs through the center of the tank to allow exhaust gases to flow up through the tank and out of the house via a chimney or vent pipe. The hollow flue is fitted with a spiral metal baffle that captures heat and transmits it to the surrounding water to maximize the efficiency of the appliance.

The Main Parts Of A Water Heater

A water heater is a heavily used but often overlooked appliance in the home that many of us never think about but could simply not comprehend living without.

The water heater is responsible for heating, storing, and supplying hot water to different parts of the home on demand, such as a showerhead, a kitchen faucet, or a bathtub. Here we look into the various parts of a water heater in more detail and how they work. You can also find this 3D diagram handy when referring to the descriptions of each water heater part.

Inlet Pipe Dip Tube And Outlet Pipe

The configuration of these pipes is what ensures that you dont get a cold blast of water when you first turn on the shower. The inflow of cold water into the tank comes via the inlet pipe, but rather than sitting on top of the heated water where it could get taken via the outlet pipe and delivered to the showerhead, the dip tube carries the cold water right to the bottom of the tank.

This ensures that the new cold water added to the tank has an opportunity to heat up before it leaves the tank via the outlet pipe and shocks an unfortunate person who was expecting hot water.

Annoyingly, some plumbers will reverse these pipes for the sake of convenience, which will lead to cold water coming out of your faucets before it has heated up, but this can be easily remedied.

First, you turn the knob on the front of the stove, setting the desired flame temperature. As you turn the knob, you will hear a quick clicking sound which is usually followed by a blue flame appearing around the burner. Internally, turning the knob triggered the pilot to spark, opening up the gas line. The combination of the spark, gas, and air produces the blue flame you see the higher the desired temperature, the more gas is initially required to reachsaidtemperature.

    Gas Regulator And Burner Assembly

The natural gas or propane that heats the water is supplied by a pipe having its own gas shutoff valve attached to a gas pipe made from steel black pipe or copper tubing. It is important to know where this gas shutoff valve is located, so you can turn off the gas in emergencies or to make repairs. The gas line feeds into a gas regulator that includes a thermostat for the water heater. This valve also supplies gas through a small secondary tube to the pilot light, which serves to light the burner when the regulator valve and thermostat call for it.

From the gas regulator, gas flows to the gas burner assembly, which you can access through a metal panel on the bottom of the water heater’s outer casing. This assembly includes the pilot light and gas burner itself. The pilot light and burner adjustment are key to proper and energy-efficient operation of the water heater. The gas flames should about 1/2 inch in height and should have blue tips . The pilot light includes a key component known as a thermocouplea small valve that converts heat to an electrical impulse. On newer water heaters, this component is known as a flame sensor. The thermocouple or flame sensor is a key safety feature, since it senses the presence of the pilot flame and prevents gas from flowing to the burner if there is no pilot flame to ignite it. Replacing a thermocouple or flame sensor is a fairly easy job.
