This Year Will Be The Final Season For Aquatica Which Will Be Transformed Into A New Sesame Place Theme Park That Will Still Have Water Attractions
- Copy Link URLCopied!
Its been a long wait, but on Memorial Day weekend, SeaWorlds water park, Aquatica, will reopen for the first time in nearly two years.
The Chula Vista park, which shut down after the 2019 summer season and was then closed for all of 2020 because of the pandemic, will mark its final season this year when it begins welcoming visitors back on May 29. After it closes following Labor Day weekend, Aquatica will be undergoing a major transformation into a new theme park Sesame Place, slated for a 2022 opening.
In the meantime, Aquatica will operate under current COVID-19 health and safety regulations, which means reservations are required, and occupancy will be limited to 25 percent. Facial coverings are still required, although not on the water rides and in the wave pool.
News of the long-awaited reopening comes the same week that SeaWorld announced that it has a new president leading its marine and water parks John Dunlap, who had been Director of the San Diego Zoo from 2008 to 2013 before forming his own attractions management and advisory company.
A hospitality industry veteran, he was president of his Iconic Attractions Group before joining SeaWorld last month. Among his projects with Iconic were the opening of the Dubai Safari Park and the transformation of the Jungle Island theme park in Miami.

Sesame Street Water Park To Open In Chula Vista
Construction is underway on a new theme park based on an award-winning TV show.
Sesame Place San Diego is the newest theme park by SeaWorld Parks and Entertainment and Sesame Workshop.
It will be located at the former site of Aquatica Water Park in Chula Vista.
The park will be completely transformed into a Sesame Street-themed water park that includes 11 water attractions, seven themed dry rides, a theater show and a parade with popular characters from the show.
Its the first of its kind on the West Coast, said John Dunlap, SeaWorld Parks and Entertainment president.
California State Assemblymember Akilah Weber was present at the unveiling of the construction site Wednesday morning. She said Sesame Street was a staple in her childhood as it was for millions of kids.
Sesame Street was one of two shows that my parents allowed me to watch, she said.
Landscape Water Conservation Ordinance
This City ordinance requires that any new or rehabilitated landscapes are designed using a water budget to help encourage outdoor water conservation. As a part of the permitting process, some projects will be required to complete either a Landscape Documentation Package or a WaterSmart Checklist. In general, the Landscape Documentation Package will be prepared for larger projects that involve installing or changing an existing landscape, while the WaterSmart Checklist is designed for smaller projects.
The size of the landscape area will determine which of these documents will be required. The landscape area is measured in square feet, and it is an area with outdoor plants, turf and other vegetation that uses water, including any water features either in an area with vegetation or that stand alone. A landscape area does not include the footprint of buildings, structures, decks, patios, sidewalks, driveways, gravel or stone walkways void of plant materials, paved portions of parking lots or other hard landscape.
For questions about water conservation, contact the City’s Conservation Section at 409-3893.

Aquatica is a waterpark theme park in the San Diego area thats fun for all age groups. Its got all the modern big water slides and rides. Youll find options for single sliders and for groups using open rafts and four-person clover leaf shaped rafts. Their wave pool is huge and powerful and their calm pools are cozy and inviting. And yes, they have a lazy river. Younger kids will play for hours in the splash pool with smaller slides, and in the play area with water jets, hoses, and geysers.
The park is typically open every day in the summer months and on weekend only in late spring and early fall.
Aquatica is located inland in Chula Vista about a half-hour drive from downtown San Diego, Coronado and Imperial Beach. If you are staying in La Jolla or the coastal towns in northern San Diego County expect a much longer drive and avoid rush hour traffic.

As Sesame Place San Diego
In 2017, Sesame Workshop announced that a new Sesame Place park would open “no later than” mid-2021. The location of the new park was soon revealed in 2019 when SeaWorld announced that Aquatica San Diego would be re-branded as Sesame Place San Diego park for the 2021 season. The Sesame Street-themed park would feature tame roller coasters, carousels and other family-friendly rides, the street made famous on TV, a parade, live shows, character interactions, and other attractions. The park retained the Aquatica water attractions into the new park, although one of the rides was removed for being deemed too extreme for the retheming.
Construction took place in phases, allowing Aquatica to remain open for the time period. The park’s opening was soon delayed to 2022, due to the COVID-19 pandemic halting construction. Aquatica soon closed for its final season on September 12, 2021, and the remains of the park were transformed into Sesame Place San Diego.
In November 2021, it was confirmed that the newly themed park would open in March 2022.
The park opened on March 26, 2022.
