South Dakota Water Parks And Theme Parks
With a total state population of less than 900,000, you wouldn’t expect to find many water parks or theme parks in South Dakota. And you’d be right.
There is one medium-sized water park and a few smaller outdoor parks with water slides and other attractions that offer relief during the summer. There are also a couple of small indoor water park resorts that provide year-round, weatherproof fun.
There are even fewer amusement parks. There are no major theme parks, per se. In fact, there are a total of three roller coasters in the state, two of which are kiddie models and one of which is an alpine mountain ride that isn’t really considered a traditional coaster.

Huether Family Aquatics Center: Yankton

Open in 2021, the Huether Family Aquatics Center is a seasonal, outdoor water park. The attractions at the small park include a lazy river, a vortex pool, a tube slide, a body slide, a family pool, with a play structure, a spray zone, and a lap pool with basketball hoops, a water walk, and an adventure climbing wall. The adjacent Fantle Park offers walking trails, a playground structure, 18-hole disc golf, basketball sand volleyball, tennis courts, horseshoe pits, and bocce ball courts.

Pirate’s Cove Adventure Golf
Pirate-themed and set amidst lush greenery, this mini-golf course is a delightful way to spend a day for families. The course, part of a chain, is a full 18-hole one with a great mix of easy and challenging shots making it enjoyable for both kids and adults. As you play through the course, you will come across fun pirate settings such as sunken ships and treasure chests. The clean and well-maintained grounds include pretty gardens, waterfalls and creeks. Thunder Road Family Fun Parks: Aberdeen Sioux Falls And Watertown
The trio of small family entertainment centers offer go-karts, mini-golf, a “Euro Bungy” jump attraction for kids, and arcades. The larger location in Sioux Falls includes a kiddie roller coaster, bumper boats, batting cages, a Tilt-A-Whirl, and a lazer maze. In 2020, the Sioux Falls Thunder Road expanded with an indoor facility that features a 7-D theater, bowling, bumper cars, ax throwing, and an arcade. It enables the center to be open year round.

Storybook Island is a non-profit children’s park that is run by local Rotary clubs. It features fairytale and nursery rhyme characters, and offers a children’s theatre. Admission to the park and the theatre is free to the public, and the park itself is supported purely through donations. Special events include Christmas Nights of Light, Safe N’Sweet Trick N’Treat, and a Princess & Pirate Ball.

The largest indoor waterpark in the region, WaTiki Indoor Waterpark Resort is choc-a-bloc with exciting water attractions. Spread over 30,000 sq ft the park has plenty of slides, swimming pools, a lazy river and even a hot tub. When kids get bored with the water, they can head to the Arcade that features nearly 40 types of video games. As the entire park is indoor, the temperature is warm and welcoming regardless of the weather outside. The highlight of this 71,000 square feet centre in Spearfish is its outdoor waterpark that is spread over 2 acres . Here you will find water slides, dump bucket, a lazy river, an adventure walk and a climbing wall. Additionally, there are a variety of fitness facilities including gyms, walking tracks and weight rooms. The water park operates between Memorial Day and Labor Day but the centre is open all through the year.
