Water Increases Your Workout Effectiveness

Drinking Water To Lose Weight, The Water Diet !!!

Your performance can suffer if you dont drink enough water during your workouts. Water helps muscles, connective tissues, and joints move correctly, as well as helps your lungs, heart, and other organs work effectively during exercise. Plus, being properly hydrated can reduce the risk of muscle cramps and fatigue during your workouts. Always drink water before, during, and after your workouts to avoid dehydration.

So now that youre hooked, how much should you drink? Studies have given varying recommendations over the years, because your individual water needs depend on age, gender, weight, health, level of physical activity, medications taken, weather, and other factors.

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine recommend the following:

  • Men: 11.5 cups of fluid a day
  • Women: 11.5 cups of fluid a day

Well, how will I get my fill of water? It can be a struggle to get your daily recommendation, but here are some of my favorite tips:

  • Track your water intake using an app or notebook
  • Carry a large water bottle everywhere you go
  • Make it taste better squeeze some lemon or lime to add flavor
  • Build it into your daily routine. Aim to drink 8 oz of water before and during all of your meals
  • Drink water before, during, and after your exercise
  • Set reminders put notes on your refrigerator or alarms on your phone

Make Sure You Drink Enough Water

If you really want the water you drink to help you lose weight, you should follow the 8×8 rule recommended by most nutritionists: Drink eight eight-ounce glasses of water per day for weight loss and to maintain an ideal weight. You might need to drink more water if you exercise a lot or sweat heavily, or less water if you drink other beverages like herbal tea .

Trent Nessler, PT, DPT, MPT, managing director of Baptist Sports Medicine in Nashville, says the amount of water you need depends on your size, weight, and activity level. He adds that you should try to drink between half an ounce and an ounce of water for each pound you weigh, every day.

How do you know if youre getting enough water? A general rule is to check the toilet after youve gone to the bathroom. Youll know youre well-hydrated if your urine is clear or very light yellow in color. The darker your urine, the more water you need to drink, especially if weight loss is your goal. What Is Water Weight

Water weight is the fluid weight your body hangs onto, explains Sass. And if youve ever started a diet and noticed the numbers on the scale dropping almost immediately, thats likely due to the loss of water weight. Do adds that body weight from water can vary from day to day and depends on ones current hydration status, dietary habits besides water, geographic location including weather and altitude, and other factors.

Water weight is often due to a higher than usual intake of sodium, because excess sodium triggers fluid retention, Sass continues. Water weight can also be retained due to hormonal shifts, she adds. If the water weight is due to excess sodium, ironically, the best way to lose it is to drink more water, and up your intake of potassium, which triggers the release of excess sodium and fluid, she explains. Potassium-rich foods include potatoes and sweet potatoes, bananas, avocados, and leafy greens like spinach, per the Cleveland Clinic.

From a health perspective, water weight is not harmful in fact, its natural for the body to hold some water weight. Rather, weight from fatty tissue is of concern for health. Total body weight is a substitute measure for fat mass weight as the latter is difficult to directly measure, he continues. Fat mass quantity directly causes metabolic health issues such as elevated cholesterol, insulin resistance and diabetes, cardiovascular and fatty liver diseases.

Scientific Study Of Link Between Drinking Water And Weight Loss

3 Ways Drinking Water Helps You Lose Weight Faster

A team led by Dr. Brenda Davy of Virginia Tech undertook a 12-week randomized trial studying the link between water consumption and weight loss in 2009. The results indicate drinking water before meals do indeed lead to weight loss.

In addition, The Economist reports the effects to appear to be long-lasting. The team followed the participants for a year after the end of the trial and found that those who drank water before a meal continued to do so and lost weight.

48 inactive Americans aged 55 to 75 were split into two groups during the trial. One group was told to drink half a liter of water before each of three daily meals, while the other group was given no instructions on what to drink.

Both groups were put on a low-fat diet. The Economist reports the women were allowed 1,200 calories a day, the men 1,500. After 12 weeks, the group that drank water had lost seven kilograms . The other group had lost only five kilos.

And, because water can help with digestion, consider drinking some after a meal. In general, though, Sass recommends spreading your water intake throughout the day.

Additionally, some drinks contain chemicals such as caffeine which stimulate urine production, Do notes. In other words, they have an opposite, dehydrating effect. While you dont need to switch to decaf for hydration purposes, he suggests trying to recognize when additional water intake should be considered for example, in cases when you are exposed to hot weather or physical exertion and make sure to rehydrate in response.

Drinking Cold Water For Weight Loss

The sheer number of fitness, nutrition, and supplementation myths surrounding weight loss is simply astonishing.

One of the biggest fallacies told to dieters is that drinking cold water boosts metabolism and helps you lose weight faster. This idea stems from the notion that our bodies expend energy to warm up. Therefore, by drinking lots of cold water each day, your body has to burn extra calories to keep you warm continually.

Sounds pretty good in theory, doesnt it?

The difference in the number of calories burned while drinking a glass of ice-cold water rather than a glass of warm water or room temperature water is only about eight calories.

And, while drinking more water can help you lose weight, the reason it does so isnt due to your body having to raise its temperature to process the cold water.

You see, your metabolism is comprised of several factors, including:

    • Basal metabolic rate ,
    • Energy burned during exercise,
    • Energy burned during non-exercise activity , and
    • Energy burned digesting and absorbing food

Your resting metabolic rate accounts for about 70% of your total daily energy expenditure. In contrast, physical activity accounts for 20%, and digestion accounts for a paltry 10% of your daily energy expenditure.

What this means is that trying to boost your metabolic rate by drinking lots of cold water each day is a very inefficient means to do so.

Ras Antagonists Drinking And Weight Loss

In other rodent models of obesity, using either angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors or AT1-specific antagonists increased drinking significantly with an associated decrease in food intake and body weight mainly through loss of fat. In some cases, the fat loss was specifically linked to increased lipolysis . The drinking responses ranged from a 30% increase to up to a doubling of normal intake in both rats and mice. With two AT1-specific antagonists, candesartan and losartan, this effect is observed in obese, rather than lean, rats . Use of the renin inhibitor aliskiren in mice on both low-fat and high-fat diets demonstrated a significantly increased drinking response with a lower body weight gain and loss of body fat over a 43-day treatment period .

Increased drinking to RAS blockade may appear paradoxical, but it could be in response to blockade-induced increased urine flow or to peripheral blockade-induced increase in AI passing through the bloodbrain barrier, converting to AngII in the brain, and activating hypothalamic AT1 receptors . It could also be in response to the hypovolemia produced by the RAS blockade, but no data were found to support this.
